Designing for Different Types of Website Users - and Why It Matters

Here’s something I see all the time: business owners create websites that work perfectly… for themselves. But here’s the thing, – you’re not your only visitor! Your website needs to welcome everyone who stops by, whether they’re speed-reading on their lunch break or deep diving into every detail at midnight.

Not everyone who visits your website is the same. Some people are in a hurry and just want a quick answer. Others are reading everything like they’re preparing for a final exam. A few are already sold on your product or service, and some are still figuring out what you even do.

So if your site only works well for one type of person? That’s a problem. That means missed clicks, fewer signups, abandoned carts, all because the experience didn’t match the person using it.

Good web design isn’t just about making things look nice, it’s about making sure the right people can actually use your site the way they need to. And since those needs vary a lot, it’s worth thinking about the different kinds of users who might show up.

Let’s talk about why it matters and how to design with real people in mind.

Why This Actually Matters (More Than You Think!)

If your website only caters to one kind of user (usually someone who’s tech-savvy, knows exactly what they’re doing, and has all the time in the world), you’re unintentionally ignoring everyone else.

When that happens, people get confused. They leave. They don’t buy, sign up, or even remember you. All because the experience didn’t match their needs or expectations.

On the flip side, when you design with a mix of users in mind, the site feels smoother for everyone. It’s faster, clearer, more helpful—and more likely to get results.

The Wonderful Humans Visiting Your Website

Let me introduce you to some of the lovely people who might be browsing your site right now:

Your Quick & Curious Visitors (The Skimmers)

These gems are moving fast – maybe they’re on their phone between meetings or juggling kids while researching. They need your key points to jump off the page. Think clear headlines, bullet points that actually make sense, and info they can absorb in seconds. They’re not ignoring your beautiful long-form content; they just need the highlights first!

Your Thoughtful Researchers

Oh, these people want to know everything! They’re reading your About page, diving into your blog, comparing every detail in your services. They’re the ones who’ll read your entire FAQ section and use your downloadable resources. They love clear organisation and detailed info (this user is me!). Give them the depth they crave – detailed case studies, thorough explanations, and resources they can really sink their teeth into.

Your Ready-to-Buy Visitors

These people have their debit card ready – you’ve got to love their energy! They need to feel confident and secure, so show them those glowing testimonials, make checkout super smooth, and remove any friction that might make them second-guess. They want to say yes to you; just make it easy for them to do it.

Your Beautiful Beginners

Maybe they’re new to your industry or just getting comfortable online. These visitors need extra love – clear explanations, friendly guidance, and language that doesn’t require a dictionary. Think of yourself as their encouraging teacher, helping them understand without ever making them feel silly for asking. Think tooltips, onboarding guides, simple language and layouts and clear calls to action.

Your Efficiency Experts

These brilliant humans know exactly what they want and where to find it. They need your site to be fast, searchable, and stripped of anything that slows them down. They’re the ones using your search bar like pros and bookmarking your best resources. They’ve been around. They know what they want and how to get it. They’re looking for efficiency: fast load times, a good search bar, shortcuts, and minimal fluff.

Your Accessibility Champions

This isn’t a separate group – it’s a reminder that people experience websites in beautifully different ways. Some use screen readers, some navigate with keyboards, some need higher contrast. When your site works for everyone, it truly works for everyone.

Designing with These Users in Mind

Okay, so how do you actually make your site work for all these different people? It’s not about building five different websites. You just need one thoughtfully designed site that flexes to meet different needs. It’s totally doable, and I’m going to help you think through it:

Start with navigation that makes sense to everyone. Whether someone’s brand new or a regular visitor, clear menus and logical organisation help everyone find their way. It’s like good signage in a building – helpful for visitors and regulars alike.

Create content that layers beautifully. Give your skimmers those scannable headlines and summaries, then link to deeper content for your researchers. Everyone gets what they need without feeling overwhelmed or under-served.

Make everything feel smooth and welcoming. Fast loading times aren’t just nice to have anymore, they’re essential. Your power users expect it, and your beginners deserve it.

Design with accessibility as a foundation. Alt text for images, proper headings, good contrast – these aren’t afterthoughts, they’re the basics of good, inclusive design. When you build this way from the start, everyone benefits.

Ensure your site looks gorgeous everywhere. Your visitors are on phones, tablets, laptops – make sure your site feels just as welcoming on every single screen.

Getting to Know Your Visitors: Identifying User Types

Before you design, understand who you’re designing for. A few tools that help:

  • Peek at your analytics – they tell such interesting stories about how people find and use your site! Where are users coming from? What devices do they use? Where are they dropping off?

  • Ask your people directly – send a friendly survey or just have conversations with clients about their experience. Ask real users what they need and expect.

  • Create user personas – imagine your ideal visitors as real people with real needs and challenges. Create detailed profiles to represent your key user types.

  • Watch how people actually use your site (Usability Testing) – this one’s eye-opening! You’ll discover things you never would have guessed!

You've Absolutely Got This!

The most beautiful websites aren’t the ones that try to impress with fancy tricks – they’re the ones that genuinely help people get what they need. Whether someone wants quick answers, detailed information, or something in between, your site can welcome them all.

Start by really thinking about who visits your site and what they’re hoping to find. Listen to their feedback, pay attention to how they behave, and design with genuine intention to help them succeed.

When your website truly serves the real humans using it, everything else – the engagement, the conversions, the connection – naturally follows.
